Joining the Fischell Institute

Fischell Institute appointees benefit from institute-generated resources that might be used to: create a prototype, generate data needed for building an FDA submission, establish national/international collaborations, and more. The Fischell Institute will stimulate health technology development within the A. James Clark School of Engineering; the University of Maryland, College Park; the University of Maryland, Baltimore; the University System of Maryland; and the state of Maryland.

The University of Maryland Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices offers three faculty appointment types classified as follows: Affiliate Fellows, Fischell Fellows, and Fischell Institute Fellows. All University of Maryland, Baltimore and University of Maryland, College Park faculty who support the Fischell Institute mission are invited to apply.

Below are the criteria for each appointment type. Please complete the online form to 1.) apply as a first-time applicant to the Fischell Institute or 2.) to fulfill your annual data reporting requirements as a current Affiliate Fellow, Fischell Fellow, or Fischell Institute Fellow. Please email fischellinstitute@umd.edu with any questions.

Affiliate Fellows of the Fischell Institute are expected to:

  • Participate in Fischell Institute seminars, social events, policy, and/or brainstorming sessions
  • Perform extramurally-funded research and/or translational activities that are aligned with the goals of the Fischell Institute

Fischell Fellow appointees are expected to:

  • Participate in Fischell Institute seminars, social events, policy, and/or brainstorming sessions
  • Perform extramurally-funded research and/or translational activities that are aligned with the goals of the Fischell Institute
  • Lead or co-lead submission of at least one multi-investigator (three or more co-PIs) external program at least once every three years
  • Engage in technology transfer opportunities, startups, and development; submit one invention disclosure every three years
  • Mentor researchers focusing on Fischell Institute themes

Fischell Institute Fellows are expected to:

  • Lead one or more active multi-investigator externally funded programs each year
  • Submit one or more invention disclosures per year, on a three-year running average
  • Engage the Fischell Foundry with one project each year, on a three-year running average

The mission of the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices is to catalyze the transformation of basic research into clinical practice and commercial success. The Fischell Institute will drive innovation by immersing creative and energetic scientists and engineers in a nurturing and rewarding research environment where engineered health systems are conceived of and investigated. The mission shall be guided by a commitment to continuous improvement.

The Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices is not the tenure home for UMD or UMB faculty. As such, an appointment to the Fischell Institute supplements the appointee's primary job responsibilities.

Fischell Institute faculty and administration also see as part of the mission, an obligation to serve the needs of the campus community, the community at large, and the State of Maryland in the spirit of collegial cooperation. The Fischell Institute is committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion both in its operation as well as in its actions promoting human health.

The Fischell Institute will also catalyze the State of Maryland’s product translation ecosystem. Our institute is composed of staff, resources, facilities, and a “network of experts” who facilitate not only prototyping and manufacturing of biomedical devices but also venture creation, intellectual property creation, and product progression through various clinical, regulatory and reimbursement hurdles. More broadly, the Fischell Institute will stimulate health technology development within the A. James Clark School of Engineering, the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the University System of Maryland and the State of Maryland.
