The Fischell Institute bridges academic biomedical research and real-world healthcare innovation, using a combination of prototyping infrastructure, regulatory and commercialization expertise, and entrepreneurship programs.

It operates across the University of Maryland's College Park and Baltimore campuses, capitalizing on Maryland’s rich life sciences ecosystem.

Through the Fischell Foundry, fellowships, internships and collaborative programs, it supports development of impactful medical devices from ideation to clinical and commercial realization.

COVID Response

After launching the Fischell Institute in 2019, the COVID pandemic presented the Institute with a unique opportunity to validate their model for taking medical device ideas from concept to commercial-ready products. In response to the need for personal protection equpitment (PPE), particularly N95 masks, in clinical settings, Foundry engineers worked with ActiveArmor to prototype, iterate, and distribute reusable, sanizizable N95 masks to first responders.
