Fischell Institute APIDA Heritage Month Spotlight: Arsalan Siddiqui
Arsalan Siddiqui (BIOE ’23) is a Fischell Institute and MPower Entrepreneurship Fellow pursuing his master’s in engineering, with a concentration in bioengineering.
Siddiqui’s research involves working with clinicians at the University of Maryland School of Medicine to develop a safer, more effective internal surgical stapler for end-to-end anastomosis—a surgical connection between two typically tubular structures, such as blood vessels.
A South Asian engineer, Siddiqui said his cultural upbringing has shaped his work ethic, emphasizing diligence and determination. This background has given him a unique perspective on problem-solving and collaboration.
Siddiqui said celebrating Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi-American (APIDA) Heritage Month is important because it acknowledges and honors the diverse contributions and experiences of individuals from these communities.
“By recognizing the achievements and cultural richness of APIDA communities, we promote inclusivity, foster understanding, and combat stereotypes and discrimination,” Siddiqui said. “It provides an opportunity to amplify voices, advocate for change, and work towards a more equitable society for all.”
The Fischell Institute and MPower Entrepreneurship Fellowship helps students transition medical device ideas into prototypes and commercial ventures while earning their Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degrees. Applications for the next cohort are currently open. Those interested in applying should submit their application by Sunday, April 14, 2024.
