BACKGROUND

Davis J. McGregor, Ph.D. directs the MIRAGE Lab, where his team builds the measurement and inference systems that qualify advanced manufactured parts at scale. The goal is a future where complex parts can be qualified at the speed of production, enabling first-time-right manufacturing for aerospace, defense, and medical industries.

His lab applies AI and computer vision to automated metrology, defect detection, predictive qualification, and traceability. Demonstrated capabilities include machine learning models that reduce failure rates in personalized medical devices by 50%, detection of hidden internal defects at over 98% accuracy using Vision Transformers, and identification of a part's printer of origin from a single photograph at greater than 98% accuracy.

Dr. McGregor is a Fischell Fellow at the Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices and a member of the AI Factory Team at the Industrial AI Center. Before joining UMD in 2023, he was Staff Manufacturing Scientist at Fast Radius (a startup acquired by SyBridge Technologies).
