Fischell Institute Staff Spotlight: Ambi Narula
Ambi Narula is the Communications Specialist for Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices. Narula also assists in communications work for the Fischell Department of Bioengineering and, most recently, the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech).
Narula graduated from the University of Maryland on December 20, 2020. She received her bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in creative writing. After graduating, Narula earned a Digital Marketing Certificate from the George Washington University. She also worked as a freelance communications and social media consultant for Improbable Comedy, Story District, and PROFILES Agency. On December 20, 2021, exactly one year after graduating from the university, Narula started her new journey as a UMD communications professional.
Narula's communications journey started when she was 20 years old. She took on a side hustle as Social Media Manager for the Jimenez-Porter Writers House, UMD's creative writing living and learning program. Narula fell in love with being a part of the university's communications activities and made it her life goal to become a full-time University of Maryland communications employee.
During her years as an undergraduate student, Narula founded the Hysterics, UMD's comedy club for underrepresented genders and minorities. She also participated as the Marketing Director of the South Asian Student Association and wrote for several campus news outlets. During her last semester, Narula created a successful podcast called "On the Record with Ambi," where she interviews UMD journalism alumni to help current students explore different career paths and job opportunities.
Narula is well known for her ambitious attitude, networking abilities and organization skills. During the pandemic, she founded Comedy Bonfyre, a monthly stand-up comedy production. Narula took advantage of being on Zoom and put together comedy shows featuring headliners she networked with from Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Comedy Central, etc. When in-person comedy returned, Narula started to produce comedy shows in the D.C. area and continued to bring established headliners for these shows.
Since being at the university, Narula has continued to explore her passion for communications and marketing. She launched the BIOE social media campaign for Women's History Month featuring BIOE's women faculty. Narula also worked with the Clark School social media team for Maryland Day and launched several DEI initiatives, such as a PRIDE month celebration and an Espresso for Equity event, to bring the community together and start conversations. She also continues to put together Fischell Institute community events and has continued writing news articles and stories featuring students daily.
Narula is located on the fifth floor of Clark Hall, saying "Yay" every few minutes.
