Fischell Institute Black History Month Spotlight: Valinteshley “Tesh” Pierre
Robert E. Fischell Institute Professor for Translational Engineering Chris Jewell’s research lab recently welcomed postdoctoral associate Valinteshley “Tesh” Pierre.
Pierre earned his doctorate in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2025 after receiving his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Florida Polytechnic University in 2019.
He was drawn to the University of Maryland by its expansive research enterprise and supportive environment for early-career researchers pursuing academic paths. Within the university, the Jewell Research Lab stood out as an ideal fit.
“I chose the Jewell Lab because of their interest in translating research from bench-to-bedside,” Pierre said. “They keep clinical questions at the forefront of their minds while asking scientifically rigorous questions. That balance is what I want to continue to build on. Furthermore, I am passionate about research in autoimmune disease because of people I know that are challenged by these diseases.”
His current research centers on using microneedle technology to increase natural immune cell tolerance to autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. The project delivers targeted signals through microneedles to help suppress harmful immune responses and prevent the immune system from attacking healthy nerve tissue.
“What excites me most is the real-world potential of microneedle technology,” Pierre said. “This work helps us understand how treatments delivered through the skin can influence the immune system throughout the body and create lasting tolerance.”
Looking ahead, Pierre hopes to lead his own research lab focused on developing advanced organoid models — lab-grown tissues that mimic human organs — to improve disease modeling and therapeutic testing.
“Beyond his fantastic experience, Tesh has brought energy and curiosity to the lab that are already nucleating new projects and positioning him as a source of leadership," said Jewell. "Great to have him as a part of our team!”
Outside of the lab, Pierre enjoys cooking, long-distance running, playing the piano, and reading or watching science fiction.
