Fischell Institute Featured at Mpowering the State Advocacy Day

On Feb. 28, the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland, College Park celebrated Mpowering the State Advocacy Day in Annapolis, Md.

The event is an annual celebration of the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: Mpowering the State. The collaboration between Baltimore and College Park began in 2012 and was formalized by law in 2016. In seven years, it has propelled innovation and impact through collaboration, generating 513 joint research proposals and $164 million in joint funding.

Fischell Institute researchers Negin Ara and Alex Woo, current students of the M.Eng. program in Bioengineering, had the unique opportunity to present their work at the event. Ara and Woo are both recipients of the Mpowering the State Student Entrepreneurship Fellowship, which was established in 2018 to help transition innovative medical device projects into great business ideas. Both Ara and Woo earned their bachelor's degrees from the University of Maryland's Fischell Department of Bioengineering in 2018.

The Mpowering the State Student Entrepreneurship Fellowship is open to students graduating from the engineering, pharmacy, or related STEM programs. Fellowship benefits include enrollment in the M.Eng. in bioengineering program, a stipend to be applied toward tuition costs, and access to dedicated lab space and material support for prototype development.
